I have read that even in his NZ Air days .. he was out of touch … lauded by many that he was a strong hand on the numbers tiller .. the other side of care, concern and empathy .. not so much. At least he’s consistent!
Big Tech has been a partial factor in the slow-burning enshittification (thank Cory Doctorow for coining the term) of legacy media. Even the ABC & BBC aren't necessarily immune, despite their long-standing public service ethos.
Although I love the ABC, during the Black Summer fires I noticed that even they were sensationalizing the fires (horrific as those were). Cobargo and Mogo were reported as “burnt”, and footage and photos of their main streets showed only the buildings that had burned. In fact, only about a quarter of each town’s main street went. Even solid, responsible journos like the ABC’s feel pressure to present events as dramatically as possible, to maximise viewer numbers.
'Out of touch' or just not genuine? Would Chris be on Tik Tok if he weren't PM or campaigning? Compare that to Jacinda on Facebook, in the evening, bleary eyed, doing end of day wraps during COVID.
I wonder how much is the person, how much is 'the image managers' shaping the person?

It's hard to tell the difference at the best of time, Robin!
