The IPSOS poll is unsurprising given the government's 'first 100 days' has seen an almost childlike enthusiasm for repealing legislation under urgency, combined with a shambolic, "what will Winston and David say/do next" vibe. It may be that we have a coalition of 3 parties who do not share a fundamental political philosophy (or Luxon''s political inexperience), but if this government is to endure, what will matter is the capacity to focus on things that matter. NZF and ACT are a worry here. In education the pragmaticism of Erica Stanford's focus on things that make a practical difference in the classroom (eg banning cell phones, a greater emphasis on literacy and numeracy and curriculum reform) could well be undermined by the headline grabbing antics of "ban school lunches" David and "rewrite the sex education curriculum" Winston.
"...almost childlike enthusiasm for repealing legislation under urgency." Really? I see you're an educator. It figures, you'd know all about children.
Focus on things that matter, eh? Matter to who, teachers?
This coalition will survive and turn this nation around to the hotshot economy it used to be, to free up enterprise and entrepreneurship, to bring bring our infrastructure pot-holed/leaking as it is, into this century, to establish a proper education system, to ensure all people have the same rights, and so it goes on.
I know though. Lets have a coalition of labour/tepartymaori/and greens. Think about that for a minute. We would not need to bother with our kids thieving from shops and ramming cars, their members do it.
It feels like an overreach and weird thing to "ban cellphones" from classrooms. I feel like it lacks a fundamental understanding of the reason behind cellphone use in class, as well as being a strange thing for the government to legislate. Shouldn't schools themselves be dealing with this issue? Or perhaps, the schools or government should examine *why* cellphones are more engaging than the archaic model of schooling we keep getting told is good.
One major point here is - they have to realise that cellphones are so ingrained in the latest generations psyche, and broader society; that banning them instead of developing methods to include them in learning might do more harm than good.
There seems top be a massive disconnect between generations that pre-date smartphones and generations that were born into them. So pushing a blanket ban on them rather than learning about the connection seems like they're missing the point.
I disagree totally with these remarks and it is obvious where Mark "hails" from on the political spectrum. Let's take a look at Labour's coalition partners; Te Party Maori with a one track mind and buried so deep by their cultural imperatives that they couldn't see over the Patea bar to an ocean of other NZer's interested in living here. The Greenies, capturing billions towards international poorly proven GW commitments that are serving to damage our economy, not to mention the attack on the farming sector (or wiping out cars in Wellington streets when you're drunk, or stealing clothes when you're capable of paying for them.) Bunch of flakes.
Erica Stanford I had high hopes for, since education was my passion and work for 43 years. BUT she didn't sack the current leader of the Ministry of Education and several other Marxists working in that Ministry. Maybe she didn't have the power to do so but that upset me.
Its funny that you're speculating on someone's political leanings when you call pretty mild politicians Marxists.
Also who do you consider the "leader of the Minister of Education", because Stanford is the Minister for Education, so it seems like you're upset at her for not firing herself.
You know who I mean. Don't come the raw prawn with me!
Dr Linda Sissons l Acting Chief Executive - no experience at sec. and primary level, "Chair of the Board of Governors of Commonwealth of Learning, an intergovernmental agency delivering technology-mediated learning for sustainable development throughout the Commonwealth," whatever the hell that means;
Wendy Kerr l General Manager, Sector Engagement, she's out. too much tonguegata, not enough fenua;
I know how education works. If you want to destroy a nation by undermining its values, use public education. That's why 6 of my 10 g'kids go to private schools.
The problem is not Luxon & Co's. The problem is the number of sniveling welfare recipients, uneducated yahoos, hand-wringing greenies, pearl-clutching empathizers and amoral half-wits we have bred in this country. Too many of them and guess which way they think - if they think at all.
They are not going to give a centre right coalition credit for nibbling at their beliefs and lifestyles.
I am 77. This nation used to be Conservative Centre right with the odd time a left party taking hold of the reigns. I see a future where the opposite will now be the case, simply because of the type of thinking that memes its way through the fabric of this nation now.
If you're 77, and educated - perhaps you can concede that in your many years on earth that perhaps you're a bit beyond the point of commenting on social issues, being that you're not really experiencing them in the same way people my age are (31). The world is not the same as when you were my age, and attacking people for the many many weird things you have is a bit over the top.
Besides which, if you're 77, considering the massive amount of knowledge accessible to people currently in schooling, you may find that the average 13 year old is more educated than you are.
That's NZer's. Miserably negative bastards who find it difficult give credit where its due. ("What's the Gov't, cos I'm against it!) Have a look back over the last 10 or 15 changes of government and you'll probably find the same result - or worse. (Except for Pink Cindy of course, who had them all starry-eyed.)
Dear Bruce. The kind of language you're using is below par for this newsletter. This isn't X. You may express your political opinions on here, but please reconsider terms like 'bastards' and 'pinky Cindy' before you post. Thanks. Grant.
No, no, it's Pink Cindy. So you're into speech safety are you? I am not at University now being lectured at by PhiDs
I feel sorry for the Pinkster, the way she is treated now that she is a private citizen. It's appalling. But we must ensure people are reminded often of the almost irreparable damage she has done to the economy of this nation through her "kindness." And as for Robertson, a University posting is a good place for him.
